The associate professorship is a permanent, full-time position, commencing on 1 October 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position is located at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas, Jens Chr. Skous Vej 3-7, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.

The position
We are looking for an innovative and dedicated candidate with a focus on Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The associate professor will be expected to develop and strengthen the department’s profile in the history of ideas.
The associate professor will be responsible for teaching and developing the intellectual history of technology based on a history of ideas approach at the department. And the successful candidate must demonstrate strong research-based teaching competences in this field. Broadly defined, the history of technological ideas/the intellectual history of technology is the study of how technologies and particularly ideas of technology have influenced perceptions of society, humanity and nature.
The successful applicant must also demonstrate strong methodological competences in the history of ideas. It is an advantage but not a requirement that the successful candidate has strong research-based competences in one or more of the following subfields:
- Antique and early modern thinking
- The history of religious ideas
- The history of psychological, pedagogical and cultural ideas (Bildung ideas).
Research
The successful applicant will be expected to develop and participate in research projects in the history of technological ideas/the intellectual history of technology, as well as contributing to one or more of the other core areas in the department’s history of ideas programme (the history of aesthetic ideas, the history of philosophical ideas, the history of religious ideas, the history of political and economic ideas, global intellectual history and the history of ideas in the human, social and natural sciences).
The School of Culture and Society places emphasis on research of a high international standard, including interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects and the attraction of external research funding.
The research activities will be evaluated in relation to the actual research time. Thus, we encourage applicants to specify any periods of leave they may need without research activities (e.g. maternity/paternity, illness, etc.) in order to be able to subtract these periods from the span of their academic career when evaluating their productivity.
Education
A key task for the associate professor will be to teach and develop the Bachelor’s supplementary subject “humanistisk teknologiudvikling” (humanistic technology development) and to teach and develop courses in the history of ideas on the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. The associate professor will be expected to contribute substantially to the interdisciplinary profile of the history of ideas at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas.
Talent development
The associate professor will be expected to supervise PhD students and contribute to the development and implementation of PhD courses in the history of ideas and related fields.
Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as described in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society partners or public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree in the history of ideas or equivalent qualifications at an international level, and must document qualifications corresponding to the completion of an assistant professorship.
Applicants must moreover be able to document:
- An established and internationally oriented research and publication record in the history of ideas/intellectual history (particularly concerning questions of technology in the history of ideas/intellectual history)
- The ability to teach the Bachelor’s supplementary subject in humanistic technology development as well as core modules on the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in the history of ideas
- The ability to teach and supervise at Master’s level in the history of ideas
- Participation in national and international research networks
- Experience of attracting external funding
- Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation.

If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, he or she will be expected to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.

Faculty of Arts refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities (the Appointment Order).
