Aarhus University, The School of Culture and Society
Tenure-Track Position (Assistant Professor) in Japan Studies
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Denmark |
Position: | Assistant Professor, Tenure Track Faculty |
The assistant professorship is a full-time, five-year training position sponsored by the Scandinavia-Japan Sasakawa Foundation and subject to the availability of funding. The assistant professorship is available from 1 August 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. It is located in the Department of Global Studies, Japan Studies Section.
A tenure-track position as an assistant professor means that within a period of five years the progress of the tenure candidate will be reviewed in relation to their fulfilment of the same quality requirements as those that apply to other associate professorships, and in relation to the criteria stated in the original advertisement. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as an associate professor at Aarhus University.
The position
Recent developments in Japan as well as in other developed regions suggest that sustainability in all its forms has a huge impact both nationally and internationally on a socio-political and economic level. For instance, Japan is a leading consumer of diverse sources of energy in Asia, as well as a country that has experienced some of the consequences, which are seen as a direct effect of global warming in recent years, such as periods of intensive heat and torrential rain. This situation is aggravated due to diverse natural and manmade disasters. Furthermore, Japan faces various challenges relating to social sustainability because it is one of the most rapidly aging and shrinking societies in the world. All these factors affect the country politically as well as economically. There is ever-increasing international interest in how Japan manages these multiple challenges as it seeks to achieve sustainability in all these areas.
The successful applicant will have strong academic competences within an area of the humanities or social sciences relating to Japan. The department has a special interest in applicants who are engaged in studies concerning sustainability issues in Japan, and who could therefore help to consolidate and expand this field in terms of both teaching and research.
Sustainability is a topic of specific interest to students and colleagues from other departments and faculties (anthropology, history, archaeology, sociology, environmental studies), as well as being one of the chief topics of the MA in Global and Area Studies that the department will be working with in the years to come. The Department of Global Studies has anthropologists and historians currently working in this area in relation to some of the other regions it comprises, and the new colleague is expected to engage in comparative research and multidisciplinary teaching with a point of departure in Japan.
Research
We are looking for a candidate with a research profile that includes sustainability issues in Japan, with a background in a discipline such as Japan/Asian studies, anthropology or sociology, history or socioeconomics/socio-politics. The successful applicant will be expected to develop new research projects with relevance for the interdisciplinary and interregional focus of the Department of Global Studies.
The School of Culture and Society places emphasis on research of a high international standard, including interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects and the attraction of external research funding.
Teaching
The successful applicant must be prepared to teach on the undergraduate and graduate degree programmes in Japan Studies (BA), and Global and Area Studies (MA), including courses in the broader field of her/his expertise. Furthermore, the assistant professor must be prepared to teach and guide the students in using original Japanese language material within the areas taught.
The person appointed to the post will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching especially designed for assistant professors.
Talent development
The assistant professor will be expected to develop his or her supervision capabilities at both BA and MA levels.
Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience in the field of knowledge exchange.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications specialising in Japan.
Applicants must also document:
- An internationally oriented research and relevant publication profile
- A good command of Japanese
- Mastery of academic English in the classroom
- Experience of or the potential for obtaining external research funding
- Experience of or interest in:
- Participation in national and international research networks
- Interdisciplinary collaboration and research
- Interdisciplinary teaching including innovative teaching methods
- Supervising student projects and interest in talent development
The application must be uploaded in English.
If the successful applicant cannot speak Danish, she/he will be required to acquire sufficient Danish within two years of commencing the appointment to participate fully in the activities of the School of Culture and Society.
The assistant professor will be expected to contribute to the department’s academic environment, including collaboration with other relevant academic programmes.
Participation in the daily life of the programme is a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.
In order to maintain and develop the department’s research environment, the person appointed is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis.

Department of Global Studies
The Department of Global Studies provides a distinct approach to understanding our contemporary world by combining language-based area studies of Brazil, China, Japan, India and Russia with European and International Studies and a global perspective. As an academic field, Global Studies was born as recently as the late 1990s, and its exponential growth and importance soared in the 2000s. Its main elements all find their root cause in the insight that contemporary global conditions cannot be studied in ways reserved for states and their interaction only. Taking a holistic approach, Global tudies takes history, cultural studies and anthropology just as seriously as political science, sociology and economics.
