Context
The University of Tokyo is Japan’s premier university. We are currently looking for an adventurous, enthusiastic scholar with a commitment to high-quality education to join our international team in the ALESS and ALESA programs.
ALESS and ALESA provide compulsory English courses for science and humanities students, respectively. The programs include a semester-length academic writing course as well as a half-semester workshop designed to enhance fluency in academic discussion. In ALESS writing classes, students design and conduct a simple controlled experiment, which provides the basis for a scientific essay in the IMRaD style. In ALESA writing classes, students conduct research on an academic topic and write an analytical or argumentative essay using proper scholarly apparatus.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should hold a PhD in the natural or social sciences, medicine, or engineering (ALESS), or in a subject field within the humanities or social sciences (ALESA). All applicants must possess a very high (native or near-native) level of English proficiency. Prior experience teaching academic writing, scientific writing, or English as a Foreign Language is an advantage.
Responsibilities
The appointee will teach seven 105-minute English classes each week. Classes meet once per week, and there are 13 to 14 weeks per semester, with two semesters per year.
Salary & Term of Contract
6,000,000 Japanese yen per year (gross salary).
The original term of contract runs from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021, and is renewable annually in 12-month contracts thereafter. Contract renewal is determined by all relevant factors, such as budget status, job performance, and conduct.. Please note that relocation costs for moving to Tokyo, including flights, are not covered.
