Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Latin American Studies in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (Ref.: 493901), to commence in September 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year contract.
The appointee will be responsible for building the curriculum of a new Latin American studies track, which will be housed within the existing American Studies programme. He/She will teach and supervise at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the American Studies programme. The appointee must exhibit promise of leadership and vision, possess an excellent research agenda, and be ready to assume administrative responsibilities as appropriate.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in a discipline (e.g. history, film, literature, or political science) which supports specialization in Latin American studies. They should demonstrate a capacity in their research and teaching to link to American studies. Those who can connect with one or more areas of studies in the School (China, European, Hong Kong, Japanese, Korean, and/or Global Creative Industries) are encouraged to apply. The appointee is expected to develop an independent research programme related to Latin American studies. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
