The Africana Studies Program (AFST) in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (https://africana.utk.edu/ ) invites applications for a full-time lecturer to teach Introduction to African American Studies and/or Introduction to African Studies beginning Spring 2020. Appointment(s) will be full-time with the possibility of renewal based on performance.
Qualified candidates with a Ph.D. or terminal degree in African American Studies or a Ph.D. in another humanities or social sciences discipline with a focus on African American and/or African history and culture are preferred; candidates at the ABD stage or with the master’s degree and excellent teaching are also encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate is expected to work with the program chair and core faculty members to teach courses, assist with recruitment and retention, and support extracurricular programming designed for majors and minors in the program (contribute service). Previous teaching experience at the undergraduate level is a plus.
The AFST program is an interdisciplinary program that offers a major degree, a minor, and a graduate certificate. It is rooted in the traditions, history, and agency of the African Americans who were instrumental in the emergence of Africana Studies in the United States. The central goal of this program is to provide students with a comprehensive interdisciplinary education and critical level of knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the Africana experience in its multiple dimensions.
