Description
The Center for Creative Ecologies [https://creativeecologies.ucsc.edu/] under the department of History of Art and Visual Culture at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar who will work under the direction of Professor T. J. Demos as part of “Beyond the End of the World”, a year-long Andrew W. Mellon Foundation John E. Sawyer Seminar on the Comparative Study of Cultures. We welcome applications from scholars in any discipline or field in the arts and humanities who study cultural and artistic expressions of futurity in the Americas (North, Central, and/or South) during the contemporary period, in ways that will connect to and enhance this research project.
The “Beyond the End of the World” Sawyer Seminar comprises a year-long series of events investigating world-ending narratives and what comes after, where futurity might be glimpsed and how it can be cultivated within a social and multispecies justice framework of ecological flourishing. Coordinated with the Center for Creative Ecologies, and administered by the Humanities Institute [thi.ucsc.edu], the seminar's primary goal will be to foster dialogue about speculative imagination and its role in future world-making in the realm of the arts, with the Postdoctoral Scholar playing an integral role.
Applicants should be able to contribute to the Center for Creative Ecologies and affiliated units in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and/or Arts Divisions in humanities-based investigations that are empirical and theoretical in nature. The Postdoctoral Scholar will carry out original research in collaboration with faculty, students, and visiting scholars affiliated with the Center for Creative Ecologies and the Department of History of Art and Visual Culture; participate in seminar activities with faculty, students, and visiting scholars, such as workshops, film screenings, keynote lectures, and colloquia; and help enhance research and teaching resources for scholars, teachers, and other researchers with an interest in the study of speculative imagination in contemporary art and film. There are no teaching obligations.
