Position: | Associate Professor |
The School of Culture and Society invites applications for an associate professorship in medical philosophy and the philosophy of health.
The associate professorship is a permanent, full-time position commencing on 1 August 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position is located at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas, Jens Chr. Skous Vej 3-7, 8000 Aarhus C.
The position
We are looking for an innovative and dedicated candidate with a focus on Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The successful applicant will be expected to develop and strengthen the medical philosophy profile of the School of Culture and Society through research as well as through teaching and course coordination, particularly with regard to courses and activities provided at the Faculty of Health. The ability to teach courses on the philosophy programme at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas (BA and MA) is also required.
Research
The successful applicant will be expected to develop and to participate in research projects on topics of relevance to the philosophy of medicine, clinical practice and healthcare, including medical epistemology, and/or the theory of science in medicine and healthcare. The successful applicant is also expected to participate in interdisciplinary research projects with researchers from the biological sciences.
The School of Culture and Society places emphasis on research of a high international standard, including interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects and the attraction of external research funding.
Education
The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses in medical epistemology and medical ethics at the Faculty of Health. This entails (a) participating in teaching general studies courses for medical students, dentistry students, public health students and sports science students; and (b) having primary responsibility for one or more of these courses. As the position is integrated in the philosophy programme at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas, the successful applicant will be expected to teach relevant courses at both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree level as well as to contribute substantially to the interdisciplinary profile of this programme.

The successful applicant will be expected to supervise PhD students and contribute to the development and implementation of PhD courses in the field of the philosophy of medicine, clinical practice and healthcare.
Knowledge exchange
Applicants should document interest in and preferably experience of knowledge exchange with society in these fields. The successful applicant will be expected to engage in public debate about health-related issues in Denmark.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree in philosophy or equivalent qualifications at an international level, and must document qualifications corresponding to the completion of an assistant professorship.
Applicants must moreover be able to document:

- Research in medical epistemology and theories of clinical practice and healthcare (on topics such as concepts of disease, illness and health, epistemological aspects of clinical epidemiology and evidence-based medicine, robustness and plasticity, and clinical reasoning)
- Research in the phenomenological, historical and sociological aspects of medical practice (such as changing views on how/why we medicalise human problems, the scope of medical authority, and the nature of the medical realm)
- Research in historical epistemology (such as Canguilhem)
- Participation in national and international networks
- Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation (notably with researchers working in the medical and biological sciences)
- The ability to teach the philosophy of medicine, clinical practice and healthcare
- The ability to teach core courses in philosophy at undergraduate and graduate level (i.e. the philosophy of technology, epistemology and the philosophy of science)
- Experience of testing and developing evidence-based teaching methods.
Please note that only submitted publications will be assessed: a list of publications is not sufficient. As a result, applications without submitted publications will not be assessed.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the department’s academic environment. We emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.
The ability to teach in Danish is considered an advantage. If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, he or she will be expected to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.
The application must be submitted in English.
