The Department of History and Department of Anthropology at Michigan State University seek applications for the position of Director of the Lab for Education and Advancement in Digital Research (LEADR). LEADR (leadr.msu.edu) is an interdisciplinary space for undergraduate and graduate students to learn, experiment, and build with cutting-edge tools, technologies, and methods for digital social science and humanities. A collaboration between History, Anthropology, and Matrix, LEADR is a place for students from across these disciplines to develop innovative digital and web-based projects in collaboration with other students and faculty. The Lab also hosts and collaborates in the development of History and Anthropology courses with a focus on experiential learning and digital pedagogies. In addition to housing a wide range of state-of-the-art technology and equipment, LEADR is a space for teaching and learning through workshops, courses, individual mentorship, project development, and scholarly play and experimentation.
The successful candidate will have broad experience in applying digital methods and computational approaches on historical, anthropological, archaeological, cultural, and heritage materials, collections, materials, knowledge, and data. The successful candidate will also have strong management experience and strong written and oral communication skills. Similarly, it is essential that the candidate has the ability to work collaboratively with students and faculty on digital projects. Also, the successful candidate should have experience with teaching digital methods (either in a workshop or in a traditional classroom setting) and developing and implementing digital pedagogy. While this is primarily an administrative position, research that is aligned with job responsibilities is presumed. The candidate is encouraged to pursue personal research as a part of a healthy scholarly life; additional time for this research can be negotiated for specific projects up to but not to exceed 10% per week. This is an academic specialist position, which is reviewed and reappointed annually.

Duties
● Collaborate with history and anthropology faculty to develop and implement digital pedagogy within classes.
● Manage the day to day activities of LEADR
● Manage graduate and undergraduate LEADR employees
● Work with representatives from the Department of History and Department of Anthropology to develop and implement a long-term strategic vision for LEADR
● Work with MATRIX staff to establish and maintain a sustainable digital infrastructure and ensure long term preservation of LEADR projects
● Collaborate with faculty from history and anthropology to develop and sustain curriculum and programs in digital history and heritage.
● Collaborate with faculty, librarians, and students from across the university on digital initiatives and programming
● Promote the work of LEADR to both the university community and the broader community of digital cultural heritage scholars and institutions.
● If successful candidate has a PhD or other terminal degree, teaching one undergraduate class per year will be expected. Teaching additional classes in the Department of History or Department of Anthropology may be negotiated.
Minimum Qualification
● Master’s degree in digital humanities, library/information sciences, history, anthropology, or closely related field.
● Project or lab management experience (including managing students in a lab, library, or project setting)
● Experience teaching digital methods in an undergrad setting.
Preferred Qualifications
● Ph.D. or other terminal degree
● Broad experience in applying digital methods and computational approaches on historical, anthropological, archaeological, cultural, and heritage materials, collections, knowledge, and data;
● Experience developing and implementing plans to sustain and preserve digital projects.
● Experience developing and implementing digitally inflected curriculum.
● Involvement in the digital history, digital cultural heritage, digital archaeology, digital library, or digital humanities community.
