Origins of Africana/Black Studies at Lehman
In the wake of the Civil Rights revolution, Black students entered predominantly white institutions to find almost entirely white faculties and a curriculum that ignored and erased Black histories, cultures, and experiences. They responded by striking and shutting down campuses across the country to demand Black Studies departments and Black professors. The only senior public college in the Bronx, Lehman was also a predominantly white institution when free tuition and the SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge) program for underserved students brought growing numbers of Black and Puerto Rican students to campus. These new students too realized that access and affordability meant little without a revolution in the curriculum and a change in campus culture. They organized the Black Students Association and demanded increased admission of minority students, the hiring of Black educators, and mandatory ethnic studies courses for education majors. After months of stalling by the administration, the students escalated these demands to include the creation of departments of Black and Puerto Rican Studies.
In 1969 after Lehman students staged a walk-out and chained building entrances shut, Lehman College finally agreed. In the decades since and despite many budget crises, the Black (now Africana) Studies department has not only endured but thrived, offering a wide array of courses to an undergraduate population that is now 31% African American and 53% Hispanic (Lehman College 2016 Factbook).
About Africana Studies at Lehman
The department is currently making a significant impact in the Bronx and broader NYC region. With this growth we seek a dynamic scholar who has a strong teaching, publication, and leadership record in the discipline/field. Our undergraduate students represent the department annually in the undergraduate research symposium, and some move onto graduate programs (CUNY Graduate Center, Ohio State University Graduate Program, etc.). Our undergraduate student enrollment is booming with over 100 majors and minors combined enrolled in 2017 and again in 2018; and the number of majors and minors graduates increased from 24 in 2015 to 50 in 2018.
The Department’s mission is to provide instruction and undertake research on the history, societies and cultures of peoples of African heritage in Africa and in the African Diaspora; as well as serve as a resource center for the African American community in the Bronx and surrounding areas.
Our faculty areas of specialization range from Africana Studies Philosophy, Diaspora in UK, Civil Rights Movement, Faculty of Color Experiences in Academia, African Feminism and African Histories, African Writers, Prison Narratives and Teaching in Prisons, African American Literatures, Black Panthers and Women in the Black Panther Party, Black Art and Black Poetry, Afro Futurism, African Diaspora in Latin America, Black Feminisms, and Afro-Latin American Literatures.
Lehman College is The City University of New York's only four-year college in the Bronx, serving the borough and surrounding region as an intellectual, economic, and cultural center. The Department of Africana Studies invites applications for a tenured associate or full professorship beginning Fall 2019. Candidates must have an active record of research/scholarship/creative works, and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The department is currently making a significant impact in the Bronx and broader NYC region. With this growth we seek a dynamic scholar who has a strong teaching, publication, and leadership record in the discipline/field.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in Caribbean Societies, African American politics and law; engage in continued scholarly activity; advise students; provide service to the department, college, university, and community (i.e. committee, administrative, supervisory, and other assignments normally associated with a full-time tenured academic appointment). Evening teaching may be required.
Starting in 2020, the teaching load is 18 hours (6 courses) per year and although the college is predominantly teaching-focused, faculty at Lehman are active in research, scholarship and creative works. Service to the college, university and community is part of the mission as is a clear commitment to student engagement including advisement. Teaching is reduced for junior faculty over the first five years for scholarly development and all faculty are actively encouraged to seek external funding. Opportunities are available for faculty development and travel awards. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship support.
PhD required. Doctorate in Africana/Black Studies or Political Science preferred. Candidate must have a strong background in the field of African American and Caribbean geopolitical area studies. We seek a candidate with proven leadership skills at the departmental level, a strong publication record that is current, and the potential for ongoing publications. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
