Samford University’s Howard College of Arts and Sciences invites individuals interested in serving in a Christian university environment to apply for the position of Chair of the Department of History at the full professor rank, beginning August 2019. This tenure-track full-time faculty position is a 9-month appointment. Qualified candidates will hold a Ph.D. in the history of Early America or the United States before 1865.
Candidates must have a demonstrated history of effective collaborative and collegial leadership with evidence of judicious use of fiscal and spatial resources, and of active scholarship that incorporates students into research activities, presentations and publications. The successful candidate will bring experience in effective recruitment of undergraduates as well as a strong record of innovative teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students.
The next department chair will be enthusiastic about contributing to a two-semester Western ideas/core text sequence or the freshman writing program. In addition, the successful candidates will teach a mix of introductory and upper-division history courses in American History before 1865. The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of publication and achievement commensurate with a full professor rank in the Department of History at Samford University. The Chair will lead a department of nine full-time faculty with over 100 undergraduate majors and minors. The department offers undergraduate majors in History, History & Legal Studies, and Global & Cultural Studies; and minors in History, Global & Cultural Studies, Latin American Studies, and Asian Studies. The department also teaches graduate courses in a fifth-year master’s program for secondary school educators. The department chair will receive one course release per semester to facilitate the duties and responsibilities of the position. The Chair will support faculty in their research and teaching needs and represent the Department’s interests to the administration and the wider community.
