~~THE APEX INSTITUTE is a 501(c)(3) organization Co-founded in 2017 by former Shelby County and Memphis City Mayor AC Wharton, Jr. and Dr. Anthony C. Siracusa.
The organization administers a civil rights fellows program for rising juniors attending Memphis area colleges and universities. Its overarching goal is to elevate innovative civic engagement for advancing social justice, equity, and equality.
The Position
The Program Director reports to the Executive Director and coordinates its work with the Chief Program Strategist and the Institute’s President. The Program Director is charged with ensuring that The Institute’s Civil Rights Fellows Program and related activities are functioning according to specified timelines and implementation plans. The Program Director works directly with the Civil Rights Fellows as well as with the Institute’s College, University, and Community partners by serving as the primary liaison, coordinator, and point-person.
Responsibilities Include:
Curriculum/Programming and Civil Rights Fellows Support
• Assisting with the Civil Rights Fellows vetting and selection process, and coordinating with the college and university partners to ensure that all related aspects are handled in a timely and collaborative manner.
• Leading the process of selecting Civil Rights Fellows with support from faculty, staff, and community partners.
• Assisting with scheduling and coordination of activities associated with Civil Rights Fellows orientation and public presentations at the conclusion of the Civil Right Fellows Program.
• Ensuring that the Civil Rights Fellows Program is conducted in accordance with planned goals and timelines relative to the programs two key components—a two-month summer research institute and an eight-month Community Learning Placement.
• Leading the process of identifying community partners for participation in the Civil Rights Fellows Program, including the process of identifying which community problems an issues to research.
• Coordinating with community partners to facilitate the Civil Rights Fellows’ Community Learning Placement experience.
• Serving as the primary facilitator of programming throughout the Summer Institute as well as providing weekly programming for Fellows throughout the Community Learning Placement.
• Identifying (where applicable) qualified and experienced faculty staff, or community partners to facilitate programming for Civil Right Fellows.
• Coordinating Civil Rights Fellows’ mentor engagement and scheduling.
• Working with curriculum/programming facilitators to assist with supporting and directing Civil Rights Fellows in their “impact-area” selection, and to prepare their research project, a “white-paper” covering their chosen impact area. (Fellows may choose for seven impact areas: Education, Healthcare, Housing, Transportation, Aging, Criminal Justice, and the Environment and the Natural World.)
Communication and Partner Relationships
• Ensuring a positive, productive relationship with the Institute’s partners so that program facilitation is handled in a collaborative manner.
• Providing the Institute’s college, university and nonprofit organization partners with timely communications and reliable coordination of pertinent activities related to the implementation and management of the organization’s Civil Rights Fellows Program.
• Working with college and university partners to ensure that the Civil Rights Fellows program is promoted on their campuses and among their faculty and staff.
• Providing timely updates and communiques to the Institute’s leadership concerning all pertinent, and any critical, developments relating to the Civil Rights Fellows program facilitation.
Committees, Speakers and Special Events
• Assisting with scheduling, convening and agenda development for the Institute’s supporting committees, which are: Editorial Board/ City Report; Program/Curriculum; Civil Rights Fellows Selection; Civil Rights Fellows Mentors; Speakers and Experts Host; Blog Masters /Communications.
• Assisting with identifying and hosting special speakers, and with coordinating related promotional events and public relations.
• Coordinating a student blog that documents student experience in the Institute and ensures that local press and media outlets are apprised of student achievement and speakers’ events.
Qualifications Include:
• Proven experience as a program manager or relevant position, such as project management.
• A Master’s Degree is required. A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline is preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to articulate the Institute’s vision and to engender support from both internal and external constituents in implementing that vision.
• Experience in working with college students, faculty and staff; and with community partners from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives.
• Familiarity with establishing and supporting an adult mentoring process.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative work setting.
• Ability to engage effectively with local and national community and college partners to strengthen the Institute’s central role of providing opportunities for student research and community-based learning.
• Familiarity with operationalizing innovative programs, developing and evaluating program effectiveness, and with assessing program impact.
• Proficient in using technology, the internet and social media.
• Ability to interact respectfully with people of diversity and with multi-disciplinary teams.
• Commitment to excellence; well-organized; self-motivated; excellent time-management and organizational skills; ability to work independently to achieve goals and meet timelines.
