Francis Marion University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of U.S. History/Social Studies Education. The successful candidate will teach survey courses in U.S. History, as well as develop and teach upper division U.S. History and Social Studies Education courses and coordinate the department’s new Social Studies Secondary Education track. The new faculty member will have a 4-3 teaching load.
The successful candidate will join the faculty of a comprehensive regional university with a strong focus on teaching and public service. The successful candidate will play an active role in student advising, recruitment activities, faculty governance, and engagement with the local community. FMU is seeking individuals with broad experiences, interests and a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts setting. The new faculty member’s responsibilities will include superior teaching, service to the department and university, and research and scholarship.
FMU Requirements: Ph.D. in U.S. History and competencies in History/Social Studies Education from an accredited institution, and current or recent teacher certification as a high school History/Social Studies teacher. Applicants whose subfields complement the Department's existing offerings, and who have at least three years public school teaching experience and the ability to teach online classes are preferred. ABD with an imminent completion date will be considered.
Francis Marion University is a state-supported, regional, liberal arts university which also has three professional schools: Business, Education, and Health Sciences. FMU provides support for research, conference travel, and summer research stipends all on a competitive basis. It is located in sunny Florence, South Carolina, a growing city with a vibrant arts culture. The campus is within easy driving distance of the state capital of Columbia, as well as Myrtle Beach and other areas of interest, among them Charleston, Hilton Head, Greenville-Spartanburg, Atlanta, Savannah, and Charlotte.
