Yale-NUS College (www.yale-nus.edu.sg) in Singapore, a collaboration between the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Yale University, seeks to hire two senior scholars to serve as J.Y. Pillay Professors in Social Sciences. The J.Y. Pillay Chairs were established in honour of Professor J Y Pillay, an eminent policy maker and corporate leader in Singapore, and are distinguished full professor posts, set aside for scholars whose work is of the highest standard and at the forefront of research in their field.
We encourage applicants in any area of Social Sciences including those that can serve our majors in Anthropology, Economics, Environmental Studies, Global Affairs, Law & Liberal Arts, PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics), Psychology and Urban Studies. The College particularly welcomes applications from scholars whose work fosters its interdisciplinary ethos. For example, exceptional scholars in any of the following areas would be extremely suitable:
- Demography
- Political Science
- Global Studies
- International Relations
- International Development
- Medical Anthropology, including Global Health
- Political Economy
- Law and Society, including International Law
- Science & Technology Studies
- Urban & Environmental Studies
These are just a few examples, and applications from scholars with a wide variety of interests within Social Sciences are welcome.
The research and teaching interests of the successful candidates will resonate with the identity of Yale-NUS as “a community of learning, in Asia, for the world”. We are especially interested in candidates who combine an active research agenda with interest in a collegiate liberal arts environment and a demonstrated commitment to creative and effective leadership in undergraduate teaching, curriculum development and mentoring.
The J.Y. Pillay Chairs will provide academic leadership through research and teaching, help inform and develop the curriculum in the College, aid in the development of both junior and senior faculty, maintain an active research portfolio in their given disciplines, and play an active role as a teacher.

- Proven excellence in and commitment to undergraduate teaching
- The vision and spirit to play a major role in the continuing development of a new type of higher education institution
