The Department of Strategy and Policy at the US Naval War College in Newport, RI seeks to fill one vacancy beginning no later than September 2019. We invite applications from exceptionally qualified scholars to teach in the resident masters degree programs of the world's oldest graduate institution of professional military education.
Strategy and Policy: The Strategy and Policy Department is one of the College's three core academic teaching departments and is composed of tenured/ tenure-track civilian professors and military professors engaged in teaching, research, and professional service. It offers graduate level education in strategy and international affairs to mid-career students from the US military, the US government, and over sixty partner-nations. Duties and Responsibilities: Specific responsibilities include teaching graduate-level courses on strategy, collaborating in development of the common core curriculum, developing and teaching elective courses in areas of expertise, carrying out research and publication, and engaging in College service. Teaching is primarily seminar-format with some lectures. The trimester system allows substantial time for research and professional development. The appointment is tenure-track, with possibility of an accelerated tenure schedule for senior-level applicants.
Qualifications: candidates must have a Ph.D in hand at time of starting employment in a field related to strategic studies, international relations, security studies, comparative politics, or military / naval / international history. Competitive candidates will have strong records of research and publication as well as demonstrated teaching excellence, particularly at the graduate level.
Candidates must be US citizens and capable of obtaining a Department of Defense
SECRET clearance.
Salary Considerations: Salary is competitive and accompanied by a generous federal civil service package including health insurance, pension and retirement savings plans, paid vacation and sick leave, and other benefits. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and credentials in accordance with the Department of the Navy Faculty Schedule.
