The Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences (GSS) and the Global Health Studies Program (GHSP) at The University of Iowa invite applications for a tenure-track joint appointment at the rank of assistant professor in the area of global health. The ideal candidate should specialize in chronic or non-infectious health outcomes and employ a geographic lens to understand the complexities of human health. Applicants in the general area of global health may be interested in a variety of specialized research areas. For example, the successful candidate might conduct research in such topics as:
- Health impacts of environmental pollutants
- Spatial patterns and processes of legal and illegal drug use
- Geographical variation in genetic predictors of cancer
- Application of informatics to large healthcare datasets
- Geographies of aging
- Spatial inequities in healthcare access
- Social determinants of chronic disease (obesity, cardiovascular disease, stroke)
- Designing healthy and sustainable cities
Successful candidates are expected to conduct cutting-edge research and work effectively in interdisciplinary teams that address significant real-world problems, playing a part in the GSS department’s and GHSP’s active role in collaborative research across campus. The successful candidate will also contribute to a broad-based geographic and global health curriculum through introductory to graduate level courses that fulfill requirements for degrees in global health, geography and related fields.
This appointment will begin August 21, 2019. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in geography or a related discipline in-hand by that date. Applicants should show promise for gaining external funding. A proven record of research and teaching excellence is expected as is the ability to complement existing GSS departmental strengths (e.g., infectious disease geography, resilience, vulnerability, sustainability, geographic information science) and GHSP strengths (political economy, gender & sexuality, histories of health).
