Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in the Department of History to begin September 1, 2019.
Major/Essential Functions: Primary teaching responsibilities will serve the history department and the Latin American, Latina/o, and Caribbean Studies Program. These include Latin American survey courses, intermediate and upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of specialization, the historiography seminar, and capstone for history majors. Other responsibilities will include contributions to general education programs, such as the College’s First Term Seminar, January Term, Three Crowns Curriculum, as well as interdisciplinary majors and minors. Gustavus faculty engage in teaching, scholarly research, and service to the college and department.

The Gustavus history department offers a dynamic undergraduate liberal arts program that emphasizes global history, the role of historically underrepresented and marginalized groups, and a capstone experience where seniors pursue independent research projects. The faculty are actively engaged in research and contribute widely to campus interdisciplinary programs.

Prerequisites
Required Qualifications: We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate in Latin American history, but will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status and will complete their degree by September 1, 2019. Candidates must have demonstrated effectiveness in teaching. A commitment to undergraduate teaching and advising is essential. The successful candidate will also have an active research agenda in Latin American history. The ability to create inclusive learning environments for an increasingly diverse student body will be an important characteristic of the successful candidate. Please indicate in your application letter how you will promote and support diversity efforts on campus and in the curriculum.
Preferred Qualifications: We seek candidates who can contribute to departmental offerings in gender and race/ethnicity as well as social, environmental, and world history. Candidates who demonstrate effectiveness, creativity, and innovation in teaching and sympathy with the mission of an undergraduate Liberal Arts college will be given preference. Geographic area open, although we are particularly interested in applicants with a specialization in Brazil, Central America, or Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Doctorate at time of application preferred.
