Position: | Full Professor |
19th/20th Century North American History: The Department of History at the University of Richmond invites applications for the inaugural Douglas Southall Freeman Distinguished Professorship in History, to begin Fall 2019. The successful candidate for this tenured chair will have an outstanding record as a teacher-scholar of North American history, with scholarship that focuses chronologically somewhere between the 1830s and the late 20th century.
We seek a colleague with a strong record of scholarship and publication who is also committed to teaching and mentoring all levels of undergraduates in a liberal arts environment. The successful candidate will be joining a department that teaches an academically strong and increasingly diverse student population; a demonstrable commitment to meaningful inclusivity through research and publication, pedagogy and course design, and/or mentoring and service is important. The Distinguished Professor’s work is also likely to include planning the use of the Freeman chair’s substantial resources as well as seeking ways to engage with the Richmond region's notable archival, interdisciplinary, and community opportunities. We welcome candidates who can, as appropriate, collaborate thematically with department colleagues of varied cultural and chronological expertise, whether in research symposia, teaching, etc. Applicants will be expected to regularly teach and participate in department and university service activities. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in history and records of teaching and publication sufficient for the rank of Full Professor at the University of Richmond. Applications will be accepted from Associate Professors who are prepared for promotion to Full Professor.
Applicants should apply online at (http://jobs.richmond.edu). For full consideration, please submit the following electronically:
(1) a cover letter indicating interest and relevant scholarship, teaching and service appropriate to the rank of full professor;
(2) a curriculum vita
(3) a statement of research, teaching, and service, including experience working with diverse student populations, ideally noting how these interests and projects might be pursued in the Richmond context;
(4) names and contact information of at least three references.
Review of applications will begin on September 15, 2018, and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the search should be addressed to Carol Summers, Lsummers@richmond.edu.
