The National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for the position of Director, Asia Research Institute (ARI).
The Institute is a leading centre for interdisciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences, focusing on Asia. With substantial University and external funding, the Institute employs over 40 research and administrative staff. It brings the finest scholars, both early career and more established, to Singapore to work in an environment that encourages innovative thinking and supports research excellence.
The incumbent Director of the Institute, Professor Jonathan Rigg, is leaving to assume a senior appointment at the University of Bristol. NUS seeks an outstanding scholar in any area of the humanities and social sciences for appointment as Director of the Institute beginning January 2019, or as soon as the candidate is available, for an initial term of three years. The Director is appointed by the Deputy President (Research and Technology) and should be a dynamic and innovative leader. In consultation with the Institute’s advisory and management boards, the Director will promote research excellence at this diverse institution.
The Director will have the academic standing for appointment at the rank of professor in a faculty or school within the University. The division of the incumbent’s appointment between the Faculty/School and the Institute is subject to negotiation.
The Director will have the ability and experience required to innovate and lead in a premier academic institution. The incumbent will provide leadership and management of research and operational functions. Proven academic and administrative leadership and experience as well as excellent people management skills are required.
