HOOVER CENTENNIAL LIBRARIAN FOR COLLECTION ANALYSIS
The Hoover Institution at Stanford University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Hoover Centennial Librarian for Collection Analysis for the Hoover Institution Library & Archives. The position is a full-time, non-career track position for a three-year fixed term.
About Stanford University's Hoover Institution: The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace is a public policy research center devoted to the advanced study of economics, politics, history and political economy—both domestic and foreign—as well as international affairs.
Founded in 1919 by Herbert Hoover before he became the thirty-first president of the United States, the Institution began as a repository of historical material gathered at the end of World War I. The library and archives have grown to be among the largest private repositories of documents on twentieth-century political and economic history. Over time the Institution expanded its mission from collecting archival material to conducting advanced research on contemporary history and economics and applying this scholarship to current public policy challenges.
With its eminent scholars and world-renowned library and archives, the Hoover Institution seeks to improve the human condition by advancing ideas that promote economic opportunity and prosperity, while securing and safeguarding peace for America and all humanity.
Education and Experience:
- An advanced degree in 20th century European history, politics or culture required, PhD preferred, and evidence of strong analytical, scholarly communication and teaching skills
- Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and two or more years of relevant experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated broad knowledge of library discovery environments and online resources
- Demonstrated experience in creating finding aids, discovery pathways and/or catalog records for library or archival collections
- Demonstrated public speaking, teaching and/or other outreach-related abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of MARC formats or evidence of ability to learn its details quickly
- Ability to use, or learn quickly, database reporting software and other print and online tools to perform complex analysis of library collections in multiple formats
- Advanced subject knowledge of twentieth-century world affairs
- Knowledge of relevant aspects of library or archival operations, including an understanding of contemporary library and archival practices, trends and emerging technologies
- Knowledge of current and emerging library, archive and museum metadata standards
- Evidence of strong interpersonal and written communication skills, and the ability to work with a wide variety of people
- Evidence of effective problem solving, analytical and organizational skills
- Evidence of project management skills
- Competence in at least one modern non-English language (preferably Russian, German or French)
