Introduction:
Reporting to Mount Vernon’s President & CEO, the Executive Director of Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington is charged with fostering serious scholarship about George Washington and his era while also developing new, and furthering existing, cutting-edge academic and public programs - as well as growing the breadth, depth, and significance of the library collection. This is a compelling opportunity for an innovative, visionary leader to head the premier center for the study of our first President and become part of the leadership team of one of America’s most storied public history sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute the strategy to maintain and cultivate the reputation of the Washington Library as the premier place for the study of George Washington and his era, while continually seeking ways to make the history relevant to a variety of audiences
- Effectively disseminate scholarly research and other relevant knowledge to a wide range of external audiences on numerous platforms
- Promote the leadership values exemplified by George Washington
- Maintain and expand public and private events at the Library including those as a place to convene for relevant conversations on George Washington legacy, leadership and preservation
- Expand connections between the Library and neighboring communities, Washington D.C., and the Federal Government
- Build collections of the library to help encourage research and support preservation
- Develop and foster external partnerships intended to strengthen the dual preservation and education Missions of Mount Vernon
- Connect educational programs, the Estate’s activities, and the Library
- Assist in fundraising for specific Library programs and initiatives
- Manage a professional staff including librarians, historians, and educators to serve the estate, researchers, and the general public
Qualifications:
- Committed to promoting Washington’s life and legacies to future generations
- Accomplished, enterprising, and experienced leader with outstanding interpersonal, communication, and management skills
- An established Ph.D., published in the field and has taught at the University level or has related experience in a historic society, museum, or research library
- Open to compelling new ways to impart the legacy of George Washington and his continuing relevance today
- Charismatic, creative, entrepreneurial and possesses a dynamic leadership style
