Postdoctoral Scholar, Penn State Humanities Institute
The Penn State Humanities Institute has embarked on a Public Humanities Initiative whereby we plan to engage in production and presentation of a multi-platform, multi-media web series featuring portrayals and discussions of socially relevant issues that center on questions of the human condition. These broadcasts will be produced in video format with a corresponding podcast series, with multiple episodes per year. These productions will require scholarly background research, interviews with scholars, and/or video-sound production expertise. In support of this initiative, the Penn State Humanities Institute has received funding for a post-doctoral scholar who will assist in the research and/or production of these broadcasts. She or he will be an active member of our team in planning and producing the episodes. Possible job responsibilities include working with the production team for script development; working with/overseeing a Graduate Research Assistant on issues of research, identifying supporting material, fact-checking, FCC requirements, and securing copyright and security clearances as needed; identifying, communicating with, and interacting with interviewees; editing interview material for both television and podcast formats; managing schedules and calendars for pre-through-post production; overseeing budget use. Exact responsibilities will be determined depending on the particular skill set of the candidate. The Humanities Institute welcomes applications from scholars who have received their terminal degrees (PhD for the humanities; MFA if appropriate for others) within the past three years (after May 1, 2014). Scholars in EITHER general humanities OR television or documentary production are invited to apply, and scholars with expertise in both will be looked at especially favorably. Terminal degrees must be in hand by July 1, 2018. Applications should include (1) a CV, (2) contact information for two references, and (3) a cover letter describing how you might be suited for the position and detailing your area(s) of expertise and training. The successful candidate will be asked to contribute to research and/or production for our Initiative. Further, it is expected that the scholar will be in residence at the Humanities Institute for the full year and take part in the intellectual life of campus by working with faculty and students, attending symposia and events, and contributing to meetings and discussions presented by Humanities Institute. The scholarship stipend is $48,900 plus benefits and a $4,000 research fund. An office will be provided at the Institute. Review of application will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
