The Faculty of Humanities seeks a Program Director to provide leadership for the newly formed undergraduate Major in Indigenous Studies. Applications are invited for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Associate Professor in Indigenous Studies; the successful applicant will serve as Director for a fixed period of 5 years.
The University of Victoria stands in the traditional territory of the Lekwungen-speaking peoples, and the Songhees, Esquimalt, and WSÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day. The University’s ‘Indigenous Plan’ (2017-2022) highlights the University’s stated commitments to the enhancement of existing relationships with local Indigenous peoples and pledges to maintain a warm, welcoming, and respectful learning environment that is accepting of Indigenous ways of knowing and being.
The Indigenous Studies Minor was established in 2001 as an interdisciplinary program. Through the development of a Major in Indigenous Studies, the Faculty of Humanities seeks to build on the existing strengths of the highly successful Minor and to contribute to the University’s stated commitments to Indigenous programming. The recruitment, retention, and success of high-quality educational, research, and community-engaged faculty members is essential to the University’s stated objectives and to the success of Indigenous Studies.
Based in the Faculty of Humanities, the successful candidate will join faculty and staff in an established and growing academic environment for Indigenous Studies across the university. This environment is supported by the Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Fine Arts, and Human and Social Development, and comprises a number of successful Indigenous-focused undergraduate and graduate programs including Indigenous Language Revitalization, LE,NONET, Indigenous Education, Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Indigenous Governance, and the Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Nationhood. The University of Victoria is committed to ensuring the quality, sustainability, and relevance of Indigenous academic programs. Supporting the continuing growth and development of the Indigenous Studies program is a priority of the University of Victoria, as stated in the ‘Indigenous Plan’.
The Faculty of Humanities is seeking an outstanding scholar to provide leadership for the new Major in Indigenous Studies and the existing Minor in Indigenous Studies. The successful candidate will have:
- a Ph.D. in Indigenous Studies or a related Humanities discipline with teaching and research expertise in Indigenous Studies;
- demonstrable leadership experience or the potential to take on a leadership position that is committed to student success, community relationship building, and program growth;
- a research record in Indigenous research methodologies premised on collaborative and principled engagement with Indigenous peoples and communities;
- evidence of teaching excellence that is grounded in Indigenous pedagogies and practices;
- a commitment to supervise and mentor students in order to support their success.
