University of Chicago, Anthropology
Assistant Professor specializing in rural or urban Africa
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Illinois, United States |
Position: | Assistant Professor |
The Department of Anthropology at the University of Chicago seeks applicants to appoint for a tenure-track assistant professor faculty position specializing in rural or urban Africa. We seek candidates whose work is empirically rigorous and theoretically innovative; areas of conceptual and topical focus are open, though we expect successful applicants to complement and expand our department’s domains of expertise. Ph.D. must be in hand prior to appointment. The successful candidate(s) will be appointed as either an Assistant Professor, or as a Provost Fellow with an initial two-year appointment at the faculty rank of Instructor. This initial period is intended to serve in lieu of a postdoctoral appointment for the same period, during which Provost Fellows will teach one class per year. At the end of the initial term, Provost Fellows will ordinarily be promoted to Assistant Professor. A goal of this search is to increase the diversity of the faculty in the Department of Anthropology, and we therefore welcome applicants who come from groups that are historically underrepresented in the discipline, such as black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian or Alaskan Native.
Applicants are required to apply online at the University of Chicago Academic Career Opportunities website at https://tinyurl.com/y6udyakn. Applications should include: (1) a current curriculum vitae, including the names and contact information of at least three referees; (2) a cover letter that describes your research and teaching profile, as well as your professional plans for the next 3-5 year period; and (3) a one-page précis of your dissertation or most recently published monograph, as well as one to two writing samples (such as dissertation chapters, journal articles or book chapters). Candidates are encouraged to apply by February 10th, 2018; applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2018.
