The Department of History at the University of Maine invites applications for a tenure-track, academic-year, assistant professor in American History with a specialization in New England. The candidate’s research interests and teaching expertise should complement the History Department’s existing programs in U.S., European, and Canadian history. Annual teaching responsibilities ordinarily include four courses at the undergraduate or graduate level. The successful candidate must be able to develop courses on the History of Maine by their second year of appointment and may advise the editorial staff of Maine History, the state journal of historical record. The development of a productive research agenda, along with service to the department, college, and university, will also be expected. A commitment to public history is preferred. Interest in the history of women, gender, and sexuality and/or Franco-Americans is also desired. The successful candidate must have a PhD in History by the time of appointment. Demonstrated teaching experience, evidence of scholarship, and excellent communication skills are also required.
The University of Maine, Orono, is the flagship campus of the University of Maine System and is the principal graduate institution in the state. It is the state's land grant and sea grant university, enrolling over 11,000 students. The History Department offers BA, MA, and PhD degrees.
