Chair, Department of Africana Studies
Senior level twelve-month appointment beginning July 1, 2018.
Applications are invited from candidates in any disciplinary tradition whose teaching and research demonstrate a commitment to Africana Studies as an interdisciplinary enterprise and a vision that holistically embraces the experiences of peoples of African descent with emphasis on Africa, the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Candidates should (1) have a doctoral degree, (2) be a tenured associate or full professor with credentials and experience that are appropriate for a senior level appointment at UNC Charlotte, (3) have administrative experience that demonstrates potential for success as a department chair, (4) have a commitment to the education of the department’s diverse student population, and (5) have a strong interest in community engagement. A record of success in securing program-related funding is highly desirable. Finalists will be asked during their screening interview to discuss how the topics of diversity and inclusion are incorporated into their teaching and research.
The Department of Africana Studies at UNC Charlotte has eight core faculty whose disciplinary affiliations include both the humanities and social sciences; the department also has close curricular and faculty connections with departments and programs across the University. More than 25 faculty in other units are affiliated with the Africana Studies department. The department enjoys a collegial and collaborative culture, and its faculty are committed to advancing scholarship, and serving students and community. The department offers a B.A. in Africana Studies (with an optional Concentration in Health and Environment), a minor in Africana Studies, and a Graduate Certificate in Africana Studies.
UNC Charlotte is a rapidly growing doctoral-granting urban university located in the largest metropolitan area between Washington DC, and Atlanta. The University is a Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement campus. Close to 29,000 culturally diverse students currently are enrolled at the University. As the largest college at UNC Charlotte, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences houses 20 departments in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and natural sciences, as well as 25 applied research centers and interdisciplinary programs. It offers eight doctoral degrees, 36 master's degrees and graduate certificates, and 34 undergraduate degrees.
