Position: | Assistant Professor, Associate Professor |
The Department of Architecture and Design (ArD) in the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (SFEA) at the American University of Beirut invites applications to a tenure-track position in the Graphic Design Program at the rank of assistant or associate professor, beginning in August 2018.
We expect the successful candidate to contribute primarily to the teaching of design history and visual theory, and potentially other core courses in the graphic design program, such as design studios. She or he will also be expected to offer advanced seminar courses in the area of her or his specialty, and advance the research/creative activities of the department. Our faculty members also contribute to ongoing curriculum assessment and growth, including the development of new graduate programs in the field. She or he will also have the opportunity to contribute to a department that is poised to grow and become a leading center for the study of design and planning in the region.
Candidates must hold a PhD or an MFA in design studies, design history, material culture, visual studies, or a related field. Candidates with demonstrated teaching experience, recognized practice in graphic design, focus on the conceptual and contextual study of design practice, and/or critical scholarship on historical and/or contemporary design are at a major advantage.
At ArD, we understand the design disciplines as cultural practices that engage social, economic and political issues; and as critical tools of inquiry that integrate process with product, and methodology with representation in a multidisciplinary manner. Our inquiry through design comes with an acute awareness of our existence in a region with a multitude of languages and cultures, and of our location within Beirut with its exceptional physical fabric and cultural formats. The discourse in the department on the city is intense and pluralistic. It links the undergraduate and graduate programs of study in architecture, graphic design and planning; and it facilitates close interaction between them and the professional community.
The department has two undergraduate programs, one in graphic design and one in architecture; and two graduate programs: urban planning and policy and urban design. The department is currently working to establish new graduate programs in graphic design, architecture, and in design studies.
Applications should be submitted electronically by December 1, 2017. The Search Committee will begin the review process on December 4, 2017. Decisions will be communicated in the spring of 2018. Applicants who prefer a visiting full-time position for one or two years will also be considered.
Candidates are asked to submit: 1) a letter of application that includes a brief statement of your teaching philosophy and research/creative activity, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) samples of design/art work and publications, 4) a teaching portfolio (samples of students’ work, syllabi…), and 5) the names and full contact information of at least three referees.
