Occidental College, Media Arts & Culture
Assistant Professor of Media Production and Digital Storytelling
|Institution Type:||College / University|
|Location:||California, United States|
We invite applications for an Assistant Professor of Media Production and Digital Storytelling to join Media Arts & Culture (MAC), a department committed to the integration of media practice, theory, and history within a liberal arts context. The successful candidate would be a critically-engaged practitioner with a compelling body of fiction-based work, who pushes notions of both form and content, as well as demonstrating a commitment to alternative viewpoints and national, ethnic, and socio-cultural differences.
The candidate would teach introductory and advanced-level production courses and critically-informed production or digital storytelling classes, exposing students to an array of historical and emergent approaches to narrative production while also deepening students’ technical capacities. The successful candidate would therefore demonstrate expertise in two or more of the following areas: cinematography and lighting; production sound and sound design; editing and post-production workflows; motion design and animation; screenwriting and narrative theory; directing and performance; audience engagement and distribution; or emergent media forms (i.e. transmedia, installation, AR/VR, interactive storytelling, etc.).
Our location in Los Angeles, one of the most vibrant and ethnically diverse cities in the country, as well as a world hub for film/media and art, provides unparalleled opportunities for experiential learning and community-based storytelling. We seek a candidate whose research and teaching plans engage such potentials—advancing the diversity of perspectives, identities, and voices represented and expressed through media and the forms and routes by which these stories can reach and engage audiences.
We are seeking an actively engaged filmmaker, media artist, or digital storyteller with demonstrated teaching abilities. An MFA or terminal degree in film or media practice is expected at time of appointment. Although not required, a graduate degree in the humanities is a plus.
