The University of Michigan invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured position in Sanskrit Literature beginning September 1, 2018. This is an open-rank search. Applicants with interdisciplinary teaching and research interests in Sanskrit Literature are encouraged to apply.
All applicants should possess a high level of proficiency in the Sanskrit language; proficiency in Pali and/or other Prakrits is preferred. Applicants with an interest in epigraphy and manuscript culture are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates are expected to teach a range of courses in Sanskrit, including literature and language, from introductory undergraduate lecture courses through graduate seminars; to supervise doctoral dissertations; and to participate actively in the programs of the department as well as in area studies initiatives within a larger university community that encourages interdisciplinary efforts.
The Ph.D. is required prior to appointment. Evidence of excellent teaching and research abilities is essential. Please submit a letter of application, CV, statement of teaching philosophy and experience, evidence of teaching excellence (teaching evaluations, awards, and/or peer reviews, if available), and a statement of current and future research plans. Junior candidates may submit representative publications or writing samples and at least three letters of recommendation. Senior candidates should include the names of suggested reviewers.
