At the Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History, the departments of Prof. Dr. Tanja Michalsky and Prof. Dr. Tristan Weddigen offer several
doctoral and postdoctoral positions for art historians
to be filled as soon as possible. Following successful evaluation, the two-years doctoral posi-tions can be extended to a third year, while the one-year postdoctoral positions can be pro-longed for a second year. Connections to the two departments’ current core subjects of re-search are welcome, but not required, which are: on the one hand, the history of art of Southern Italy from the Middle Ages to early modern times, cartography, and film; on the other hand, Italian conceptions of modernism and postmodernism, Italy in a global context, and materiality and mediality, from early modern times to the present. An outstanding degree is a prerequisite; participation in the institute’s activities is expected.
The application should enclose the following documents:
- a curriculum vitae
- a description of the research project, including a bibliography and a workplan
- a copy of the last thesis or dissertation
- other reading samples and publications
- references, no letters of recommendation
Depending on specific individual conditions, the Max Planck Society offers to doctoral candi-dates a funding contract, which combines the academic freedom of a scholarship with the se-curity of a contract of employment, while postdocs receive a fixed-term contract of employ-ment. Concerning remuneration and standard social benefits, both types of contract follow the model of the civil service collective agreement (TVöD Bund). The Max Planck Society wants to increase the share of women in all areas, in which they are underrepresented, and thus ex-plicitly invites them to apply. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society wants to employ more se-verely disabled persons, whose applications are highly welcome.
