The Department of History at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, invites applications from qualified candidates for a two-year term appointment in Russian and Soviet History at the rank of Instructor (level I or II, depending upon qualifications), beginning on August 1, 2017.
Position description: We seek candidates with an established record of teaching excellence. The primary duty of the successful candidate will be to teach a 3.0 credit course load in core courses in the field of Russian and Soviet History and in other fields of European history depending on qualifications, with an additional load (0.5 credits of course release) for special projects that contribute to the goals of enhancing student recruitment and retention as well as enriching student experience. In addition, the successful candidate will take on the normal administrative responsibilities of an Instructor to contribute actively to the Undergraduate Program coordination and development, and may, for example, explore and implement innovative approaches to course delivery, take responsibility for first year recruitment events, develop and support opportunities for students both on and off campus, engage in mentorship of undergraduate students, and help ensure consistency across sections of introductory courses.
The successful candidate will teach a range of courses from large lecture classes to small seminars in their area of expertise and for 2017-18 may include:
HIST 2600 History of Russia 1.0 credit (100 students)
and 1.0 credit in the following:
HIST 1001 The Making of Europe 1.0 credit (100 students)
HIST 2809 The Historian’s Craft 0.5 credit (50 students) or HIST 3810 Historical Theory 0.5 credit (50
students)
Carleton’s Department of History is home to about 400 undergraduate and 50 MA and PhD students, and
is committed to teaching and research on a variety of geographical, temporal, theoretical, applied and
interdisciplinary fields. Of our faculty, ten are historians of Europe and their interests span Ancient Rome
to the present. The Department benefits from its proximity to embassies, Library and Archives Canada,

Qualifications: At the time of appointment, applicants should have a completed Ph.D. (or expected to be completed prior to August 2017) in Russian and/or Soviet History or a cognate discipline relevant to Russian and Soviet History. The ideal candidate will have a record of excellent teaching, the capability to engage and inspire students in their academic work, a thorough understanding of discipline-specific pedagogy, the ability to contribute to the Department’s program and course development, and the potential to make an outstanding teaching contribution to the Department. Experience in collaboration with schools, communities, and organizations, and an ability to work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment would also be assets.
