Starting Salary Range: $55,800.00 - $77,900/annually.

Involves oversight and coordination of research grant programs, including program development, planning and evaluation, peer review and applicant relations, grant application and award management, and synthesis and dissemination of research findings.
The Research Development (RD) Specialist participates in campus-wide research development activities conducted by the USCS's Office of Research. Research Development Specialists help position UCSC for emerging opportunities and work as a team to provide consistent support for UCSC researchers (e.g. opportunity scouting, proposal scoping, pre-award consultations, hands-on proposal development, proposal review, coaching/mentoring, and early career training/outreach, etc.). UCSC's research development activities include complex large-scale multidisciplinary/multi-institutional initiatives, strategic opportunities, training grants, and discipline-specific extramural funding opportunities. Research Development Specialists will serve as liaisons to one of UCSC's academic Divisions (e.g. Physical and Biological Sciences (PBSci), School of Engineering (SOE), Social Sciences (SocSci), or Arts) and collaborate across Divisions, depending on the scope and context of extramural funding opportunities. Division-specific activities will reflect divisional priorities and scope and may include outreach to divisional faculty, scouting of extramural opportunities relevant to divisional faculty, proposal planning and coordination, and representing the division in ORD meetings and strategic planning. The Specialist may develop specific expertise in opportunity management or aspects of proposal production including planning, management plans, broader impacts, and communications. The ideal candidate will have: a strong research background, fluency and enthusiasm for research development, and knowledge of the academic funding enterprise. Successful candidates will be detail-oriented, self-motivated individuals with excellent skills in project management, grant and technical writing, data analytics and visualization, and document production. Expertise in developing and maintaining on-line resources and data management is also sought. Specialists must have an advanced degree and direct experience in writing competitive research proposals relevant to the scope of the UCSC research portfolio.
UCSC's Office of Research Development (ORD), established in 2016, is a new unit in the Office of Research. The mission of ORD is to catalyze the UCSC research enterprise with an emphasis on responsiveness to research opportunities, emerging opportunities, and providing consistent support for UCSC researchers (e.g. opportunity scouting, proposal scoping, pre-award consultations, hands-on proposal development, proposal review, coaching/mentoring, and early career training/outreach, etc.). ORD staff collaborate on developing resources to streamline proposal development, promoting cross-campus research communications and collaborations, helping to facilitate collaborations with other institutions, conducting workshops and training, developing research portfolio analytics, and implementing metrics for tracking/optimizing success. ORD staff work directly with UCSC's Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) to enhance the quality, timeliness, and competitiveness of UCSC's submittals.
- PhD in relevant field and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
- Academic background, experience, and currency in selected disciplinary research area.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
