The University of Michigan’s Department of American Culture invites applications for a full-time Lecturer III position teaching American studies and providing coordination, advising, and outreach to our undergraduate student community. This position has an anticipated start date of fall 2017 pending final budgetary approval. The successful applicant will offer a mix of courses in American studies that will complement our existing strengths and contribute to our undergraduate mission. We are seeking a broad range of interested applicants with training in American studies, ethnic studies, and/or related humanities and social science fields. We are, however, particularly interested in individuals who might offer classes on U.S. political/social movements before 1965; LGBTQ studies; disability studies; and/or U.S. popular culture. Additionally, this person will serve as the principal academic advisor for our various majors and minors. Working with American Culture’s leadership team, they will also participate in creating events or programming that will build connections and community among our undergraduates in the department and larger campus. We expect that this individual will be a visible and engaged faculty member in our department. Demonstrated excellence in teaching and engagement/service with diverse student populations will be critical criteria for selecting the successful candidate. A Ph.D. in American studies or a related field is required before the start of the appointment.
