History - Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a one-year Teaching Fellow in U.S. history with a focus on the Colonial/Atlantic World, beginning August 2017. Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of 2,500 students, most of whom live on a wooded 115-acre campus. Rock Island, Illinois is part of the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse metropolitan area with 400,000 residents approximately three hours west of Chicago.
Augustana’s history department is dedicated to innovative and effective history teaching, and the successful candidate will gain an opportunity to cultivate teaching skills in a liberal arts environment. Teaching responsibilities include introductory history courses in Colonial U.S. history, an upper-level history course in the area of the candidate’s expertise, and the possibility of interdisciplinary courses in Augustana’s innovative first-year inquiry program. Special consideration will be given to candidates with a demonstrated ability to teach African, World and/or European history. The department seeks candidates eager to develop classroom pedagogies that foster historical thinking and possess a keen interest in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. The college is on a trimester calendar, and Teaching Fellows are expected to teach 7 courses (2/term). In addition to teaching responsibilities, the candidate must be prepared to serve a growing cohort of racially and ethnically diverse undergraduates and promote the success of a diverse student population.
