Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cognitive Neuroscience (890861)
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Denmark |
Position: | Post-Doctoral Fellow |
The Interacting Minds Centre at the School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in cognitive neuroscience. This is a full-time position which is available from 1 August 2017. It is associated with the research project “What Social Robots Can and Should Do—Towards Integrative Social Robotics”, supported by the Carlsberg Foundation (Semper Ardens Grant).
Research context
The research project “What Social Robots Can and Should Do—Towards Integrative Social Robotics” will define and implement a new paradigm for developing social robotics applications. “Integrative Social Robotics” (ISR) tightly integrates robotics research with a wide scope of research disciplines that investigate human social interactions, including empirical, conceptual and value-theoretical research in the humanities. To investigate the performance of the new method, the team will design and test several innovative social robotics applications that promote socio-cultural values and norms of personal well-being, such as fairness, authenticity, autonomy and creative self-realisation.
The successful applicant will be a member of a project team of 25 international researchers from 11 disciplines (philosophy, robotics, anthropology, psychology, linguistics, education, communication, management, cognitive science, computer science and sociology). The project is coordinated by Professor MSO Johanna Seibt at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas, and will run from 2016 until 2021. Research profile
The research tasks of this position will centre on discovering how the physical design (appearance, movements, functionalities) of social robots relates to aspects of implicit social cognition and guides humans in ascribing agency and intentionality to robots.
The research tasks in this complex, interdisciplinary project are partly pre-defined, but it is expected that all the project members will contribute supplementary research ideas. The successful candidate must have teaching experience and will be expected to contribute to team-taught courses at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels in her or his area of expertise (a maximum of nine hours per semester).
The successful candidate should be capable of critically applying neuroscientific approaches to the above-mentioned research topics; should have detailed knowledge of principles of experimental design and statistical methods applied in cognitive neuroscience; and should have experience of work in highly interdisciplinary teams. For further information about the position, please contact the project manager, professor MSO Johanna Seibt, e-mail filseibt@cas.au.dk
Qualifications
Applicants for this position should hold a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications.
Applicants must have the documented ability to conduct research using one or more neuroimaging modalities (for instance EEG/MEG, fMRI, PET and TMS). We will prefer candidates who master the statistical methods used in neuroimaging, in order to apply those methods critically and appropriately in research.
Due to the inter-disciplinary nature of the project, and its affiliation with the Interacting Minds Centre, the ability to engage in philosophical discourse in the designated topics of research will be viewed favourably. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to produce research publications of a high international standard. Very good command of academic English in oral communication is required; proficiency in Danish will be an asset.
Applicants should submit
• a research proposal relevant to the description of the research profile above (max. three pages). The proposal must be uploaded together with the letter of application.
The application must be submitted in English and prepared for an interdisciplinary evaluation committee.
