About the Position:
ESA is currently seeking a junior-level Architectural Historian to join a growing group of architectural historians within ESA’s Cultural Resources Group in any one of ESA’s Southern California offices. The candidate selected for this position will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of interesting architectural history projects throughout southern California and elsewhere in ESA’s geography, including being part of interdisciplinary teams working on projects in our Water, Energy, Community Development, Transportation and Airports practices. The successful candidate will conduct archival research using primary and secondary sources; perform historic resources surveys; document resources on California Department of Parks and Recreation 523 Series Forms; prepare historic resources assessments and evaluation reports, as well as other documentation; and contribute to environmental documents (EIS/EIRs, EA/MNDs, etc.).
Requirements:
Candidates must possess outstanding problem-solving ability, excellent written and oral communication skills, strong computer skills, and a demonstrated ability to work both independently and with a team. Qualified candidates should have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural History or related field with at least two (2) years of experience in historic preservation or related field (Master’s Degree preferred); knowledge of the history and architectural styles of the western U.S. and California (Southern California experience preferred); experience with recordation and evaluation of historic architectural resources, as well as the application of federal, state, and local evaluation criteria; knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, CEQA, NEPA, and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards (experience conducting regulatory compliance reviews preferred); and a desire to learn new skills and gain exposure to documentation, evaluation, and treatment of a variety of resource types including urban and rural built resources, and transportation, water and energy infrastructure.
