The University of Alberta Museums seeks a dynamic, creative, and team-oriented Curator for the Mactaggart Art Collection, one of the leading North American collections of Ming and Qing dynasty art. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Curator will work with the UofA Museums Team and other sectors of the University of Alberta, to build upon recent accomplishments and further position the Mactaggart Art Collection among the world’s preeminent Asian Art Collections. The Curator, Mactaggart Art Collection, will be responsible for: collection development, independent curatorial research related to the Collection and the Curator’s areas of expertise, facilitating new acquisitions, ensuring physical and intellectual access to the Mactaggart Art Collection, contributing to collections policy and procedure development, maintaining professional museum practices, and contributing to fund and resource development related to the Collection.
The Curator will be engaged in the following activities that will build upon the scholarship associated with the Collection and enhancing the Collection’s international profile:
- Developing research program goals related to the Collection that: ensure scholarly documentation, advance scholarship in the field of Asian Art, ensure the collections’ records are accurate and reflect current scholarship, and broaden access to the Mactaggart Art Collection
- Conducting independent research that creates new knowledge resulting in collection-based exhibits, publications, web-based projects and targeted public programs to engage various publics, international and local, with the collections and in the Curator’s area of expertise
- Ensuring prescribed museum standards of care, handling, movement and storage of objects in this Collection are followed
- Teaching and/or delivering workshops, lectures and seminars as required for University of Alberta students, peers, the general public, etc.
- Contributing to the development of the volunteer and student internship program
To be successful in this position, the incumbent will have the following education and experience:
- Master's Degree in Asian Art history/Asian Textile history, or related discipline; PhD preferred
- Proficiency in Chinese language, verbal and written, as well translating/transcribing texts
- At least five years progressive responsibility in curatorial work including evidence of success in collections research and publication, exhibition conceptualization, and collections management
- Demonstrated commitment to connoisseurship
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and field research
- Scholarly standing and distinction among peers in the field
- Evidence of established relationships with individuals and networks of relevant academic colleagues, and with institutions and individuals with related collections or programs
- Demonstrated ability to interact collaboratively with all levels of campus personnel, students and volunteers internally, general public, potential Collection donors, and related museum/gallery professionals externally
- Demonstrated knowledge of museum standards related to collections management, care, handling, security and exhibition of Collections objects
- Knowledge of sources of funding for research and exhibitions and demonstrated ability to acquire funds
- Demonstrated ability to present lectures, workshops, gallery tours and related programs to general, professional and related publics
- Supervisory skills related to paid staff and volunteers
- Physical ability, knowledge and skills required to organize the Collection

The Mactaggart Art Collection is composed of more than 1,000 rare works of art, including textiles, costumes, paintings, handscrolls, hanging scrolls, albums, engravings, and other artifacts from ancient and modern East Asia. It is one of few collections world-wide to have among its holdings works such as Southern Inspection Tour Scrolls of the Kangxi and Qianlong Emperors, and folios from the Huangchao liqi tushi with corresponding textiles. Recent accomplishments include the establishment of the Visiting Scholars Program, an international research symposium and lectures series, an on-line catalogue framework, and an exhibition program in support of the University of Alberta’s academic and strategic plans. The Mactaggart Art Collection is part of the University of Alberta Art Collection (UAAC) which totals more than 10,000 works of art including historical and contemporary prints, paintings and sculptures ranging them the 15th century to the present and representing Canadian and international artists. The University of Alberta Art Collection is one of 29 museum collections that form the University of Alberta Museums, a unique academic museum system that brings together multidisciplinary academic collections that range from art to zoology.

In accordance with the Sessionals and Other Temporary Staff Agreement, this position is for a term length of 5 years and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at www.hrs.ualberta.ca with an annual salary range of $68,004 to $112,917 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
