Lakehead University is conducting an extensive search for a Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and invites expressions of interest, applications and nominations.
Lakehead is a comprehensive university with a reputation for innovative programs and cutting-edge research. With campuses located in Thunder Bay and Orillia, Lakehead has approximately 10,000 students and 2,160 faculty and staff. With an emphasis on collaborative learning and independent critical thinking and a multidisciplinary teaching approach, Lakehead offers a variety of degree and diploma programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels through its ten faculties, including Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Health and Behavioural Sciences, Natural Resources Management, Science and Environmental Studies, Social Sciences and Humanities, Graduate Studies, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (West Campus) and Ontario’s newest Faculty of Law.
Located at the head of Lake Superior, Lakehead’s Thunder Bay campus is one of the most beautiful in Canada, with many of its programs complemented by fieldwork and a focus on northern socio-economic issues. The University has annual expenditures of $164 million, and its annual economic impact on the cities of Thunder Bay and Orillia is $311 million and $41 million respectively. The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities provides engaged, creative and interdisciplinary studies to approximately 1,900 full and part-time, undergraduate and graduate students through its various disciplines of Criminology, English, History, Indigenous Learning, Interdisciplinary Studies, Languages, Media Studies, Music, Northern Studies, Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, Visual Arts, and Women's Studies. Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities will be responsible for all academic, administrative, and external activities of the Faculty. Candidates will have strong achievements in teaching, research, scholarly activities and service, demonstrated administrative and management capabilities in a collegial university setting, and experience in budget management and resource allocation. The Dean will be an excellent communicator with an open and collegial style, an understanding of interdisciplinary teaching, research and educational innovation, the ability to inspire staff, faculty and students, and the capacity to build and sustain positive work relationships with academic and other administrative units. The ability to promote and serve as an advocate for the Faculty’s mission, goals and ongoing accomplishments will be essential.
