The Department of Political Science at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of U.S. governing institutions. We are interested in applicants who can demonstrate research and teaching expertise in the structures and processes of governance at the national and subnational levels in the United States. Specialists in the complex interactions among executive, legislative, and/or judicial branches at any level of government; across multiple levels; among governmental actors, interest groups, political parties, and the mass media; or in American political development will be given priority. Emphases on the dynamics of gender, race, class, or religion are of particular interest. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester. This position will begin August 10, 2017.
Required qualifications: Earned doctorate in political science or related field at the time of application or degree in hand by August 10, 2017. Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in conducting research and teaching courses on governing institutions and processes in the U.S. Successful candidates will have documented effectiveness in both undergraduate and graduate teaching in order to meet the Political Science department’s key needs in its B.A. and M.A. programs and those of doctoral students in cognate programs. Potential for excellence in research and teaching is required.
Desired qualifications: Preference will be given to broadly trained candidates who have grounding and skills in a variety of theoretical, analytical, and methodological approaches to social science research, and who can work with undergraduate and graduate students.
