Position Summary:
The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) seeks to hire a full-time faculty member in the field of terrorism studies. The appointment will be in the Institute's MA program in Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies (MANPTS) in the Graduate School of International Policy and Management (GSIPM). The position is open with respect to rank (assistant, associate, or full professor); for an individual with appropriate professional experience an appointment as a professor of practice is also possible. The position is also open with respect to areas of expertise within the field of terrorism studies, but we are especially interested in candidates who can teach courses on policies and strategies for responding to terrorism, such as counterterrorism, homeland security, or the roles of intelligence or law enforcement. Ability to teach one or more of our required core classes, such as introduction to terrorism, global politics, or research methods, would be a plus. Expertise in a relevant region or area in world politics, ideally complemented by appropriate language capabilities, is also welcomed. For an appropriately qualified candidate, the position may also come with an option to run our terrorism research center, MonTREP (the Monterey Terrorism Research and Education Program). An interest in serving as the director of MonTREP is not however a requirement to be considered for the faculty position. MIIS has a non-tenure, contract-based system. The initial appointment is for three years. Renewal after three years is based on performance in the areas of teaching, research, and service. Faculty work on a nine-month contract, and the standard teaching load at MIIS is 3/2. This position will report to the MANPTS Program Chair and the GSIPM Dean.
