The Department of Political Science and Geography at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position (Open Rank) in cybersecurity and national or international security, global affairs, and governance to begin Fall 2017.
Required Qualifications: All applicants must have a Ph.D. in Political Science or a directly related discipline by August 31, 2017. Applicants must have a track record of scholarship, publications, and/or research funding relating to cybersecurity. We are especially interested in candidates who link cybersecurity to broader social, political, economic, and policy questions in the contexts of national and/or international security. The position is part of a cross-disciplinary, campus-wide initiative in the area of cybersecurity. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to collaborate on research and grant applications with faculty in Computer Science, Engineering, and UTSA’s highly regarded Cyber Security Program. Teaching responsibilities include two courses per semester in the Political Science Department’s proposed online graduate program in Global Affairs and/or traditional undergraduate or graduate classroom courses in Political Science and Global Affairs. The successful applicant will be expected to teach graduate and undergraduate courses on topics such as Politics and Cyber-Security, New Global Threats, and Global or National Security Policy. Scholars doing cross-disciplinary research in applied cyber security research are encouraged to apply but an applicant’s primary field must be Political Science or a closely related discipline. Applicants must demonstrate potential for research publication and a strong potential to attract external funding, and have a strong theoretical grounding in national or international security.
All applicants must provide evidence of scholarly and professional publications commensurate with the rank for which the applicant is applying. All applicants should also provide, if possible, some representative evidence of high-quality teaching – ideally in courses that address cyber security in the context of national or international security, global affairs and governance. Applicants must also be willing to teach a range of courses in international relations or global affairs.
To be considered at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level, successful applicants must be able to articulate a research agenda and have an emerging record of publications, excellent teaching skills, and a commitment to service.
To be considered at the tenured Associate Professor level, successful applicants must have an established research agenda, a strong record of publications, excellent teaching skills with demonstrated effectiveness, and a track record of service. Tenure is contingent on Board of Regents approval.
To be considered at the tenured Full Professor level, successful applicants must be recognized authorities in their respective fields of specialization and have excellent teaching skills with demonstrated effectiveness and a track record of service. Tenure is contingent on Board of Regents approval.
Preferred Qualifications: Applicants at the Full or Associate Professor levels should demonstrate an ability to acquire external funding. Preference will also be given to candidates who can teach courses in traditional and emerging sub-fields of political science and international relations/global affairs, and/or in such areas as environmental governance, law and institutions, compliance, and/or transnationalism.
Responsibilities: Teach, advise, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; pursue an active research and publishing agenda; and serve the University, profession, and community.
All information and materials associated with an application for this position must be submitted electronically through https://jobs.utsa.edu/. In PDF format, applicants should submit the following items electronically:
1. Letter of application that states the rank for which the candidate is applying, research interests, teaching experiences, and qualifications for the position;
2. Current curriculum vita;
3. Copy of all graduate transcripts;
4. Samples of written or published scholarly work (no more than three);
5. Two representative samples of syllabi for courses taught or proposed by the applicant;
6. Teaching evaluations (if available or other evidence of course instruction evaluation);
7. Names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of three references who are familiar with the applicant's scholarship and/or teaching and can be contacted to provide letters of recommendation.
