The Department of History at Florida Atlantic University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in 19th or 20th Century African American and Africa/African Diaspora History. Candidates will exhibit promise of excellence in research and teaching, and demonstrate a commitment to generating externally funded grants. Research fields and subfield specializations are open. Teaching load is typically 2-3 and will include the U.S. and world history surveys, the historical methods course required of majors, as well as upper-division and graduate courses in African American, African, and African Diaspora history. Three of the university’s major strategic initiatives are the academic engagement with and promotion of Peace, Justice and Human Rights, Diversity, and South Florida Cultures. The ideal candidate would become involved substantively in one or more of these (https://www.fau.edu/provost/files/approved.plan2015.pdf). The faculty member also would be encouraged to participate in the college’s PhD in Comparative Studies program and in the development of an “Americas” multi-disciplinary area of excellence. PhD must be in hand by the time of the appointment, though advanced ABDs will be considered.
