The University of Richmond invites nominations and applications for the Richard L. Morrill Distinguished University Chair in Ethics and Democratic Values for up to one semester in 2018-2019. The nominee’s teaching and writing should demonstrate interest in the relationship between foundational values and ethics and various spheres of human activity, such as education, politics, business, or other areas of professional responsibility. The chair holder will be appointed to a department or school at the University of Richmond, with the possibility of joint appointments among one or more departments or schools.
The chair holder will offer at least one public lecture, lead a faculty seminar, or teach a course in his or her area of expertise; and otherwise engage with the intellectual community of the University. Compensation is competitive, including support for research during the period of the appointment.
From 1988 to 1998, Chancellor Richard L Morrill served as the University of Richmond’s seventh president. A scholar of the history of religious ideas and ethics, he has an enduring interest in the foundation of human values and democratic practice. A strong proponent of liberal arts education, Chancellor Morrill has a longstanding scholarly commitment to the ethical capabilities and presuppositions that sustain a democratic community. In his writings, teaching, and administrative leadership, he has addressed the connections between fundamental values and strategic leadership. The University of Richmond’s Board of Trustees elected Richard L Morrill to be the first holder of the Chair from July 1, 1998 to June 30, 2004.
