Role Summary:
The term of appointment will be up to 9 months with possible renewal, starting on October 1st 2016, for work on an externally sponsored research grant. We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated research assistant/associate to work in a unique and new research project funded by the Qatar National Research Fund. The project will be led by Dr. Nabil Khattab at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) with collaborations from Kingston University, University of Bristol and Qatar University. The project, focusing on school experience, aspirations and achievement will create the first ever longitudinal dataset not only in Qatar, but in the entire region. The successful applicant will be based at DI and will work directly under the supervision of Dr. Nabil Khattab in the department of Sociology and Anthropology. The successful applicant should have at least a Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in sociology, education or any related discipline. He or she should have proven working knowledge and experience of conducting literature reviews, advanced quantitative research skills, data analysis and writing high quality research papers. Experience of mixed methods research would be an advantage. The candidate should have an interest in education issues, migration and/or social stratification and be willing to work in an inter-disciplinary team. He/she may be asked to take on some teaching responsibilities or related duties at the DI.
Key Responsibilities:
• Take a key role and actively participate in data collection and fieldwork. • Contribute to data management and classification. • Analyse and interpret data generated by the project. • Carry out other forms of data collection and analysis as required by the needs of the project. • Work in collaboration with the LPI and other project team members (including overseas PIs). • Contribute to project dissemination through pro-active use of social media. • Prepare, maintain, and update website, Facebook and Twitter materials. • Help in preparing progress reports for the LPI and funding agency • Prepare other articles, reports, and presentations as required. • Write supporting documents to contribute to and support the work of the LPI and project team. • Help prepare papers for journals, and presentations at national and international conferences and seminars to disseminate research findings. • Contribute to the intellectual life of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, the Faculty of Social Sciences and humanities and the wider DI community through attendance at research seminars and other events. • May participate in the teaching of modules in quantitative research methods and other courses • Other tasks as directed by the LPI
Job Requirments:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The preferred applicant will have at least an M.A. degree in a related field and a good academic record.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: At least 2-3 years work experience related to the field of research.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Experience with specialized software such as SPSS or Stata and working with large datasets.
