Kalamazoo College seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Chinese language, literature, and culture beginning late August 2017. Area and period of specialization is open. The successful candidate will join a growing East Asian Studies program, comprising specialists in Chinese language and literature, Asian history, Japanese language and literature, and Japanese language and sociolinguistics. Part of a cohort of four tenure-track searches in the languages division, this appointment provides a unique opportunity for collaboration across language disciplines. Salary is competitive and consistent with level of experience. Teaching expectation is six courses per year (2-2-2, in three terms), including four Chinese language courses, ranging from beginning to advanced, and two culture courses taught in English. The successful candidate will contribute to the depth and breadth of a growing East Asian Studies Program, as well as the College’s “Shared Passages” core curriculum.
Ph.D. (or evidence of imminent completion) required, as well as native or near-native abilities in both Chinese and English. The successful candidate must demonstrate a high aptitude for and interest in undergraduate teaching, a commitment to the liberal arts, a promise of scholarly excellence, and a desire to involve undergraduates in scholarship both inside and outside the classroom. Later in the process, candidates may be asked to provide a language teaching demonstration video and a writing sample.
Kalamazoo College is a highly selective, nationally known liberal arts college, offering an integrated undergraduate experience that weaves a traditional liberal arts curriculum into educational experiences in both domestic and international settings. The College sends some eighty percent of its graduates on study abroad for three, six, or nine months, including half a dozen per year to China. The campus is located midway between Chicago and Detroit/Ann Arbor in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a metropolitan community of 225,000, which supports several college and university campuses along with numerous civic arts and cultural associations. Thirty-five miles from Lake Michigan, the area offers many opportunities for outdoor activities.
