THE DEPARTMENT:
As one of the first Anthropology departments to be established at a university in South Africa, the Department of Anthropology at Rhodes University prides itself on offering internationally and nationally relevant curricula and in producing top class students. Presently, the Department of Anthropology is the third fastest growing department in the Rhodes University Humanities Faculty, with student numbers at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at around 400.
Currently the department contributes to the discipline of anthropology across a range of fields and interests, including: migration and identity, illness and healing, performance and creativity, biocultural diversity and heritage, indigenous knowledge, ecological anthropology, and studies concerning, gender, racism, kinship, childhood and youth. The academic staff are also seriously committed to applying research and skills in the wider community and strive for excellence in fieldwork and teaching. The department is revitalising itself, and therefore welcomes innovative and exciting approaches to anthropology and its relevance within contemporary South Africa and beyond. The position offers an opportunity to contribute to reshaping a decolonised vision of anthropological pedagogy, theory and research practice.
Requirements:
Senior Lecturer: At least a PhD in Anthropology Teaching experience at the undergraduate and post graduate levels required.
Lecturer: PhD, or substantial progress towards completion of a PhD in Anthropology with some teaching experience.
Experience in teaching and research in some of the following disciplinary areas: Medical and/or Environmental Anthropology, Genetics and Anthropology, Anthropological Theory, Gender relations/Gender theory, Anthropology of the body, Anthropology of food or consumption, Economic Anthropology, Physical Anthropology, Visual Anthropology, Childhood and Youth, Urban and Political Anthropology is required.

Remuneration
Senior Lecturer Level:
Approximate cost to company: R554 884 per annum
Basic salary Pension: R427 917 per annum
Basic salary Provident fund: R403 397 per annum
Lecturer Level:
Approximate cost to company: R463 914 per annum
Basic salary Pension fund: R354 351 per annum
Basic salary Provident fund: R334 046 per annum
Although this position is advertised as a Five Year contract, the University may appoint on permanent basis.
