The School of Culture and Society, Department of Global Studies, at Aarhus University invites applications for an associate professorship in global governance with a special focus on development policies regarding regions of the global south, as well as a specialisation in international project management.
The associate professorship is a full-time, permanent position available from 1 February 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
The Department of Global Studies has a focus on regional and trans-regional research, and aims to provide a distinct approach to and understanding of the conditions of our contemporary globality. By combining cutting-edge area studies with history and the social sciences, the Department of Global Studies offers education and research which combine distinct knowledge about certain areas, their languages and cultures with state-of-the-art academic research in the emergent field of global studies. Accordingly, the department is seeking an innovative and dedicated candidate who will contribute to Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. We are particularly interested in applicants with an international research profile in global governance and documented expertise and research experience in the field of international development policies and project management. The associate professor will be responsible for teaching global governance and for teaching international project management on the Master’s degree programme in International Studies. While the position is anchored in the International Studies programme, we expect the associate professor to teach and develop activities at a broader departmental level.
Additional tasks include support of the outreach strategy of the International Studies programme, especially regarding international organisations, universities and companies. The position also entails work to strengthen the global governance profile of the Department of Global Studies through international research as well as through actively engaging in the further internationalisation of the study programme.
Research
The School of Culture and Society emphasises high-quality research and attaches great importance to interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects, and the ability to attract external research funding. Accordingly, we are looking for a candidate with a strong academic profile and track record in the study of international development through a multi-regional geographical expertise. We are particularly interested in applicants whose training and recent research allow them to integrate regions of the global south into structures of global governance and focus on the study of inequality and the role of natural resources from a political economy or political sociology perspective.
In the application, applicants should explicitly present their vision and plans for the development of global governance within the Department of Global Studies at Aarhus University with regard to interdisciplinary research and teaching.
Education
The successful applicant will be responsible for developing courses on global governance and international project management on the Master’s degree programme in International Studies. Moreover, she/he will be expected to teach and develop courses at a broader departmental level. Further, we are particularly interested in applicants with experience of collaborative teaching activities.
Talent development
The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the recruitment and development of junior researchers and to contribute to the talent development and supervision of PhD students and to teaching and developing PhD courses in relevant fields.
Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or public dissemination of knowledge.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in political science, political economy, sociology, law or related fields, and must also document:
- Relevant, substantial and internationally oriented research contributions as well as participation in national and international research networks.
- Experience of interdisciplinary research cooperation.
- Experience of obtaining external research funding.
- Experience of teaching international project management.
- Prior experience of teaching in an international classroom.
- Interest in initiating and participating in collaborative projects in international contexts.
- Experience of the application of innovative teaching methods, such as new forms of team teaching and collaborative student involvement.
- Experience of supervising student projects and interest in researcher talent development.
Applicants are expected to contribute to the department’s academic environment. We emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students. Participation in the daily life of the programme is a high priority.

Work environment
The Master’s degree programme in International Studies at Aarhus University is a multidisciplinary programme which is taught in English. In recent years, it has developed into one of the largest Master’s degree programmes taught in English at the Faculty of Arts, attracting students from all over the world.
