Reporting to and working with the Faculty Director and Editor-in-Chief of SHARIAsource, the Executive Director of SHARIAsource will develop and build a new online portal at Harvard Law School designed to connect Islamic law content and context. The aim is to effectively ensure the successful launch and growth of SHARIAsource together with its staff, fellows, and partners and consistent with its mission: to build a cutting-edge portal for Islamic law content and context that facilitates a community of exchange among legal academics, policy experts, and media producers.
The ED is responsible for overall strategic, programmatic, financial and personnel management of ILSP and its related initiatives in three areas: (I) project development and execution, including leading strategic planning and operations, establishing and managing resources to support and execute strategy, academic programming development and website development; (II) communications and relationship management, including engaging and consulting key partners, funders and and stakeholders, networking to establish funding sources and academic collaborators, and developing social media and communications strategy for academic, policy and media channels – including building out and managing a network of editors and contributors; (III) budgeting and financial administration, including grant-writing and private fund generation, and legal and financial compliance, as well as serving as liaison with internal university stakeholders and external funders.
• Project Development and Execution
o Create 1 – 5 year plan with input from key parties
o Establish resources to support and execute strategy: HR (hire team), grants, operational best practices
o Develop academic programming and oversee website development
• Communications and Relationship Management: funders, academics, media/policy, institutional partners, and other stakeholders
o Engage and consult key partners such as EIC, Berkman center, HLS, to ensure program/grant compliance and to maximize resources
o Network to find and establish new funding sources (grants), academic collaboration and policy and media channels
• Budget & Financial Administration (general administration and grants generation and management)
o Ensure budgets are made and met, legal and financial compliance
o Liaise with internal university stakeholders and external funders
Perform other duties as necessary, including acting as a representative or “ambassador” for SHARIAsource in a variety of contexts.
Basic Qualifications
• A JD or other advanced degree (J.D., MBA, or M.A./MPP/MPA) and 7+ years of progressive financial, administrative, and supervisory experience are required

• PhD preferred
• A successful candidate will almost certainly have an advanced degree in law and/or business, Middle Eastern studies, political science, sociology, history or a related discipline.
• Working knowledge of Arabic
• High-level leadership, management and organizational skills, with demonstrated experience in successfully managing a department or office staff;
• Proven ability to manage diverse stakeholders. Applicant must be competent to lead an international coalition of collaborators, to develop appropriate goals and timelines, and to follow through on identified deliverables.
• Strong organizational skills and great attention to detail.
• Proven ability to manage a team, including editorial contributions of written work, and to manage related process of peer-review.
• Strong written and oral interpersonal and other communication skills, including superior writing and communications facility and the ability to communicate with legal academic, humanities, legal practitioner, media, policy, and generalist audiences;
• Willingness to work closely with those of different cultural and national backgrounds. Sensitivity to various stakeholders’ concerns and an ability to navigate interpersonal dynamics is required.
• Ability to execute fundraising and grant-writing as well as budget management and book-keeping.
• Dexterity or ability to gain dexterity with website development and internet communications, including social media and online platforms for communications and database and resource management.
• The applicant should also be able to: identify the resources, procedures and systems need to achieve general goals; develop, implement and revise plans; prioritize work and resources based on strategic objectives in an intense work environment; serve as leader and team member and as a role model for other members of the staff while working with them to achieve organizational goals; facilitate program staff’s delivery of specialized programs in an integrated manner consistent with the highest standards of organizational and academic excellence; and encourage staff development.
• Knowledge of webpage management and graphic design are instrumental for the Program’s scholarly resource and collaboration, marketing and communications needs, as is knowledge of relational database management for effective organization of large number of electronic files, and ability to learn new programs and use them to advance the programs, productivity and visibility of the Program.

This is a term appointment currently expected to extend to June 1, 2017, subject to funding and departmental need.
