The Historical Office of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD/HO) is seeking to identify potential historians for contract positions in its Publications and DoD Leadership Support programs that will be advertised for bid by fall 2016. Both positions require a Ph.D. in history or defense date set at time of contract and the ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
Duties and responsibilities for a contract position in the Publications Program include writing a book-length manuscript on the history of Secretaries of Defense or the defense acquisition process. Volumes average approximately 400-500 pages in length and include photographs, tables, charts, extensive endnotes, bibliographies, and detailed indexes. Research for the volume includes preparing for and conducting oral history interviews to complement documentary sources.
Duties and responsibilities of a contract position in the DoD Leadership Support Program include responding to requests for historical information from senior officials in the Office of the Secretary of Defense and writing information papers on special topics in DoD history.
Representatives of the OSD/HO will be available to meet with anyone interested in contract positions at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Military History, April 14-17, or the Annual Meeting of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, June 23-25. Individuals interested in speaking with Historical Office representatives about career opportunities with OSD/HO should send a C.V. and cover letter describing their interests and qualifications to Thomas Christianson, Senior Historian, at thomas.e.christianson.civ@mail.mil by April 4, 2016. Submission of a C.V. does not serve as an application for the contract positions. Interested individuals must still bid on those positions via FBO.gov.
