The Department of Social Medicine in the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University (OU-HCOM) invites applications from individuals at the rank of associate professor or full professor for the position of Department Chair. Ohio University is a public university with a main campus located in Athens, Ohio. It is the oldest university in the Northwest Territory and the ninth oldest public university in the United States. OU-HCOM is the largest medical school in Ohio and one of the largest in the nation, with a main campus in Athens and two new extension campuses. One extension campus is in Dublin, Ohio, and the other is in Cleveland, Ohio. OU-HCOM is a national leader in medical education with its focus on primary care and its innovative "three campuses, one college" system. Each campus has unique affiliations with internationally prominent healthcare institutions.
The Department of Social Medicine has faculty on all three OU-HCOM campuses. The Chair of the Department will be located on the Athens campus but will be responsible for Social Medicine faculty on all three campuses. Within OU-HCOM, the Department is a hub that unites the clinical, biomedical, humanistic, and social science dimensions of OU-HCOM's primary care mission. The Department extends the primary care clinical and research agenda of OU-HCOM to the greater university through its partnerships with the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Health Sciences and Professions, the Scripps College of Communication, and the College of Business. The Department further extends the reach of OU-HCOM's primary care mission to its community and state partners as well as to its affiliated university partners and its global partners in Africa, China, and beyond.
The successful candidate will hold a tenured faculty position in the Department of Social Medicine and must have excellent interpersonal and management skills; a commitment to inclusive and collaborative leadership,; a demonstrated record of preclinical medical teaching and curricular innovation; experience in supervision of staff and mentoring of pre-tenured faculty; evidence of efficacy in interdisciplinary teaching and research; a history of external funding and a program of ongoing research; and a compelling vision for how the Department of Social Medicine occupies a core role in medical education and research.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching: Offer lectures to medical students in the candidate's fields of interest and facilitate case-based learning sessions.
Research: Continue to conduct and publish research and to seek external funding
Administration: Serve as a leader and advocate for the Department and OU-HCOM; collaborate with the Chairs and faculty of other departments within and outside of OU-COM;work closely with the Executive Dean and the two campus Deans to develop the Department in ways that contribute to the achievement of OU-HCOM's mission and vision; develop collaboratively and implement short-term and long-term Department plans, programs, and goals in the areas of teaching, research, and service; assign faculty workload distributions in teaching, research, and service,and monitor individual faculty's productivity in these areas; manage funds and finances of the Department; ensure effective communication occurs among the Department, other departments within OU-HCOM, the administration of OU-HCOM; the university's key groups (i.e., Faculty Senate); and the university's upper administration.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates should have a strong record in teaching, research, publishing, and grants activity commensurate with their rank and their discipline. Candidates should also have a Ph.D. and a strong record of academic leadership in the areas of creating and overseeing curriculum, managing budgets and financial matters, and working with human resources staff and policy. Candidates who have earned a DO or MD, along with the required Ph.D., also are encouraged to apply. Candidates' disciplines may include, but is not limited to, anthropology, health economics, history, medical ethics, political science, public health, and sociology. Preference will be given to candidates whose disciplines complement current faculty and whose research interests align with the major Primary Care Research initiatives of the OU-HCOM: maternal and child health; aging; global health; rural and underserved populations; and healthcare delivery science.
