The Department of History is inviting applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship to start in the 2016-17 year in American cultural history before 1877 (broadly construed). Regional area and specific chronological frame are open, but it is particularly hoped that the candidate’s research agenda will build upon key strategic College and University research strengths. The candidate will teach key classes in pre-1877 American history and expand the existing undergraduate/graduate curriculum.
Starting Date and Salary: The position begins in August 2016. Salary will be commensurate with training and experience.
Candidates must establish a successful research program and contribute to the interdisciplinary life of the university community.
Teaching load is 5 courses per annum. A successful candidate will develop an undergraduate curriculum in US history focusing upon the pre-1877 period. S/he will teach key benchmark classes in the department’s assessment program. In addition, the candidate will contribute to graduate education, both in the department’s MA and PhD programs and in related university signature research areas.
Required: Applicants should hold a doctorate in history and work on US cultural history, broadly conceived, with particular focus upon the pre-1877 period. The department can consider doctoral candidates who have completed all requirements and who will defend their dissertations by date of hire.

1. potential for teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate level; 2. research and teaching interests which complement, and build upon, the department’s present strengths; 3. strong potential for developing external funding in the humanities and social sciences; 4. strong potential for developing cultural history in undergraduate and graduate instruction; 5. strong interest in interdisciplinary research and collaboration and working across the humanities and social sciences; 6. strong potential for research productivity, including publications, presentations, and grant writing; 7. demonstrated skill to interact effectively with students and faculty; 8. capacity to mentor effectively graduate students
